Motty's Residence (Alleppey)
If
you are after a warm welcome, an experience of a Kerala home with
Kerala hospitality and some excellent Keralan food then look no
further. One does not need too many adjective to describe it,
in simple words – the place is lovely, relaxing and clean,
but most of all it has the feeling of home!
Mr. Motty and his wife Lali (a wonderful cook) are were impecable
hosts, so warm & welcoming, and nothing is too much trouble
for them, if you need any help or advise. The house is situated
in the centre of this charming town, which definitely hasn't been
hit yet by the big tourist trade. Motty is a antique collector,
and takes great pride in his home and possessions, and the house
is stuffed wonderful Indian antique furniture. The rooms are charming,
with huge antique style Indian bed, which you will have to take
a running leap at to get in !!!! but thankfully, steps are provided.
Don't expect TVs, mini bars or jacuzzi, just good old fashioned
Indian hospitality with a couple who really do enjoy having you
in their home.
Murickanadiyil,
Kidangamparambu Rd, Thathampally, Alappuzha 688 013, India
Activities:
With
the Arabian Sea on the west and a vast network of lakes, lagoons
and fresh water rivers crisscrossing it, Alappuzha is a district
of immense natural beauty. Referred to as the Venice of the East
by travelers from across the world, this backwater country is
also home to diverse animal and bird life. By virtue of its proximity
to the sea, the town has always enjoyed a unique place in the
maritime history of Kerala.
A singular characteristic of this land is the region called Kuttanad.
A land of lush paddy fields, Kuttanad is called the Rice Bowl
of Kerala and is one of the few places in the world where farming
is done below sea level.
The boat cruise along the backwaters of Alleppey gives one first
hand experience of the life style; toddy tapping, fishing for
small fry, Coir-making, prawn farming etc., which remains more
or less unchanged over the years

Pepper County (Kumili, Idukki)
Situated at Amaravathy (Ottakathalamedu), in Kumily with a quiet,
serene ambience, Pepper County is unique with its unmatched facilities
and services. Far away from the madding crowd, it is buried in
a 7-acre plot full of spice, ayurvedic and fruit trees and plants
gently sloping down to the green paddy fields. With the Iravikulam
National Park in the district and the Periyar Wild life Sanctuary
just kilometers away, nature lovers can have the time of their
lives watching elephants in the wild, see herds of bison, sambar
deer and on a lucky day, spot the elusive tiger. Since the heritage
homestay is situated in Ottakathalamedu (which means hill with
the shape of a camel’s head) the guest can go to the countryside
and walk through the paddy fields.
It
is an ideal place for trekking also. The Periyar Lake can be viewed
from the top of the hill. One can literally feel the difference
in the air since the air is not polluted and the greenery ensures
fresh air.
For
those who want more than just an accommodation, the family serves
the taste of delicious Kerala cuisine. The Kerala fish curry,
appam, avail etc. have a very exotic flavour. The method of preparation
is so different that it makes Kerala cuisine very distinct and
liked by all. Those who want to escape city life, and prefer to
explore by foot will experience a unique ecosystem and observe
the countless species of wildlife and vegetation. After a good
day at the house the guest can watch the sunset amidst mountain

Philipkutty’s Farm (Kumarakom)
Staying at Philipkutty’s Farm is an excellent opportunity
to enjoy the real Keralan experience in a fascinating location,
with a caring family to look after you. It is a special place,
as it provides something different, especially for those who prefer
small and friendly places, and, could just be, the perfect hideaway
for the bespoke traveller.
You
are welcomed, looked after, and cared for by the family (wife
Anu, mother Aniamma, son Philip and myself - Vinod). Though the
family hosts you, your privacy is assured as the five waterfront
villas are entirely independent and away from the family residence.
The first villa designed by Karl Damscen, a Swiss architect, is
a traditionally styled, antique filled, open plan affair, with
sufficient space for a couple and an extra bed if need be. The
other four villas designed by Thomas Dominic, are the same in
style and deco, but with separate bedroom, living room and ‘sit-out’
facing the peaceful waterfront.
All
this is set on a beautiful small farm island which was actually
reclaimed from the backwaters (Vembanad Lake) in the early 1950’s
by my grandfather. The working farm, which practices sustainable
/ organic methods of farming, is two metres below the lake level
and has coconut, toddy, nutmeg, banana, cocoa and pepper cultivation
not to forget the jumbo prawn (scampi) and karimeen (pearlspot)
found in some of the farm canals. Though accessible by road (up
to the opposite bank), it is the ‘vallam’ (countryboat)
that will finally take you across.
Address:
Pallivathukal, Ambika Market P.O, Vechoor
, Kottayam District, Kerala

Facilities in the Resort
The five villas are filled with antiques, including some beautifully
carved and crafted doors and windows, which were meticulously
collected over a period of time. There is no air-conditioning,
no telephone and no TV in any of the villas. TV and telephones
are available at our residence, should the need arise.
There is a well stocked refrigerated mini bar and an electric
kettle in each room. The five villas are well furnished with two
large single beds, wardrobe, cupboard, writing table and chair,
settees and chairs in the ‘sit-out’. Not to forget
the clean, dry and spacious modern bathroom in each villa. Extra
beds are available if needed, and there is also a generator to
backup the electricity in case of any power failure. All windows
are netted to check the entry of insects.
There are plenty of doors and windows in each villa (18 windows
and 8 doors) which open on to the farm, garden and backwaters,
allowing for excellent circulation of fresh breeze and fascinating
views from within. This is in keeping with the tradition of typical
backwater bungalows. The idea was to make each villa an integral
part of the surroundings so that by living in one you are not
cut off.
The floor is finished in rustic clay tiles and the ceiling in
wood. There is also a small verandah finished in traditional red-oxide
which runs around each villa.
To complement the villas, there is a beautiful thatched pavilion
on stilts, overlooking the farm with views of the backwaters.
The pavilion opens on to a small, neat courtyard under an old
mango tree. Just the kind of setting for the lavish home cooked
meals and interaction.
In designing the villas, we kept in mind all the traditional features,
and also the fact that we were designing a house and not a ‘hotel’
room.
