Bangalore became an important fortress city under Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, although little remains from the period except the Lalbagh Botanical Garden and a small palace. Later, in 1831 the British moved their regional administrative base from Srirangapatnam to Bangalore and the town began to take on the ordered look of a British cantonment. Mysore is a city of palaces, gardens, shady avenues and sacred temples and retains some of the old world charm with its many institutions that propagate Carnatic Classical music and dance.
